Duties
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) delivers exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste. Joining H2C means becoming part of a team dedicated to creating "The Solution Today for a Better Tomorrow." At H2C, our culture is deeply rooted in our Vision, Mission, Values, and Behaviors, which guide our efforts on the Hanford Site and within our communities. Our vision to tackle the Department of Energy's largest environmental challenge reflects our commitment to leaving a positive legacy for future generations. We strive to deliver exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. Our values emphasize living safely, acting with integrity, and working collaboratively as a team. We encourage innovation, personal accountability, and continuous improvement, fostering an environment where everyone is empowered to contribute to our mission and celebrate our achievements. By embracing these principles, you will be part of a forward-thinking organization dedicated to making a meaningful impact today and for the future. The Mission Analysis and Planning (MAP) group within H2C supports the tank waste treatment mission through the development and analysis of plans, risks, contingencies, and alternatives for mission execution. Planning activities occur on a range of time scales, from detailed near-term operational planning through long-term system planning. Plans and analyses are backed by computer simulations and process modeling. Within MAP, the Near-Term Planning and Integration Team is responsible for charting a course for the next several years of H2C operations, ensuring alignment of operational plans with mission objectives, proactively identifying and developing mitigation strategies for operational risks, and maintaining an integrated operational plan backed by current and accurate modeling. To fulfill these responsibilities, the team interfaces and engages with multiple engineering and operations organizations within H2C and utilizes knowledge from these interfaces to maintain an operational planning model aligned to current field conditions. H2C is seeking a senior engineer to support the Near-Term Planning and Integration Team. The senior engineer will provide a leadership and/or oversight role in projects and products executed by the team. This senior engineer position has the following responsibilities: * Gather and coordinate the fulfillment of operational planning needs across the company * Maintain integration and functional interfaces with operations, engineering, and project controls to promote the free flow of information both into and from planning products and models * Communicate planning products and information in an easily digestible format to H2C management, DOE, and other stakeholders, utilizing multiple methods including Visio, Excel, Tableau, Power BI, and PowerPoint * Author technical reports and briefings, and present to audiences of varying size and organizational levels * Provide technical input to operational decision-making, prioritization, and fiscal year planning efforts * Leverage modeling tools and engineering expertise to identify innovative and cost-effective approaches to meet operational targets and cleanup milestones in a highly constrained operational environment * Lead the modeling and evaluation of planning scenarios to identify operational gaps, risks, opportunities, and trajectories towards near-term milestones * Proactively identify and oversee the development of alternative planning scenarios to mitigate impacts of risks, operational upsets, or emergent field conditions * Develop, maintain, and verify the implementation of model requirements for assigned systems * Develop and execute test cases for model implementations using independent calculations and SQL queries * Prioritize model updates and enhancements, coordinate their implementation with the Software Development and Maintenance organization, and oversee testing of new model versions * Identify and oversee the implementation of automations and work process improvements to increase the efficiency and capabilities of the team.
