Overview At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget. Our directorates related to Mission Support & Operations include Office of General Counsel, Business Services, Communications and External Engagement, Operational Systems, Communications and Information Technology, and Performance Management. The Operational Systems Directorate (OSD) leads delivery of PNNL’s 10-year, $1.2 billion campus construction portfolio— the single largest construction and modernization effort in the Laboratory’s history. OSD oversees operations and facility services, maintenance, and infrastructure planning. A team of nearly 800 staff comprise OSD, spanning in a wide range of disciplines, including craftspeople, engineers, construction professionals, technicians, scientists, administrators, and specialists. Together, they ensure that PNNL’s assets, services, and OSD-led programs are managed and performing safely, securely, reliably, effectively, and efficiently. The directorate stewards more than $250 million in annual budget authority; managing more than 2.5 million square feet of facility space across two campuses; overseeing approximately 200 regulatory program areas; and executing a multi-million-dollar facility and infrastructure project portfolio. The mission of the Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) Division is to minimize risks, assure compliance with regulatory standards, and promote a culture of safety, health, and environmental stewardship. EHS&S focuses on reducing environmental impact, promoting employee health, preventing workplace incidents, and safeguarding physical and information security. Core functions include risk assessment, safety training, environmental stewardship, health monitoring, emergency preparedness, and implementing security measures. EHS&S fosters a culture of safety, maintainability, and continuous improvement, ensuring operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and long-term organizational resilience. Responsibilities The Protective Force Sergeant position is a full-time position with variable and flexible hours. The incumbent must be able to work shift work hours that are conducive to a 24/7 security operation, as well as be receptive to being called into work with short notice. The Sergeant position is an essential employee and is required to work their scheduled shift during all lab holidays, closures, releases and delays. This position reports to the Protective Force Program Manager and receives direction from the Protective Force management as appropriate. The position requires professionalism, initiative, drive, rigor, and accountability. In addition to fulfilling the Security Officer (SO) job functions, the Sergeant provides supervision and oversight of the daily functions, activities, and staff on each shift, to all designated Protective Force Posts. The Shift Sergeant position is critical in ensuring the safety and security of PNNL staff, visitors and facilities by initiating emergency response and management notifications. Each emergency event requires the Shift Sergeant to take appropriate steps to mitigate the event through proper communication and response. Responsibilities include: Deployment of management expectations; post deployment and shift rotation; shift pass-on; performance evaluation; documentation quality assurance; training; shift scheduling; and general oversight of SO staff. In the absence of Protective Force management, the Sergeant is the acting supervisor. They serve as the intermediary between line management and the SOs. Responsible for making notifications and coordinating events as requested. The position requires the incumbent to perform physical activities, do moderate lifting, climb stairs, remain standing and sitting for extended periods of time, maintain alertness throughout long shifts, and utilize sensory awareness (visual, auditory, olfactory, etc.) in the performance of duties. Additional Responsibilities Serve as the Sergeant for assigned shifts. Perform all responsibilities, duties and tasks of a SO. Demonstrate familiarity and compliance with all policies and procedures. Oversee procedural implementation and review and creation of the daily log. Ensure procedures are followed appropriately and safely. Direct and monitor shift operations in accordance with all guidelines. Ensure a thorough flow of information is transferred from shift to shift. Coordinate proper positioning of SOs to provide appropriate alarm, public safety response and shift turnover. Ensure the integrity of the data entered in the Daily Activity Log. Report to the Protective Force Manager any SO who is routinely out of compliance with established standards or lacking successful adherence to performance indicators, such as, tardiness, sick leave, insubordination, poor attitude, timecard charges, failure to perform as expected, etc. Ensure SO’s and oncoming Sergeant and/or Corporal are fit for duty. Provide training, as appropriate, to assigned SOs, ensuring all training requirements for responsible SOs are maintained. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma/GED and 6 years of relevant work experience -OR- AA or higher and 4 years of relevant work experience Preferred Qualifications: Prior military or law enforcement experience. Previously held U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) L or Q clearance, or U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret or Top Secret (S/TS) clearance. Prior experience as a 9-1-1 dispatcher or in a high-volume call center. Prior experience in a management or leadership role. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment This position does require shift work, applicants must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays. This position also requires applicants to be able to perform and pass the DOE and PNNL Protective Forces Training Program. Work involving hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. A security clearance background investigation includes review of your employment, education, financial, and criminal history, as well as interviews with you and your personal references, neighbors, and co-workers to determine trustworthiness, reliability, and loyalty to the United States. The investigation also examines your foreign connections, drug and alcohol use, foreign influence, and overall conduct. Requirements: U.S. Citizenship Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy if non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months cannot be demonstrated. This position requires the following: Valid state-issued driver's license Applicants must possess mental, sensory, and motor skills, and be medically fit, as required to safely and effectively perform all normal and emergency response job duties. Applicants must meet the requirements set forth in Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 1046 (10 CFR 1046): Medical, Physical Readiness, Training, and Performance Tests for Security Officers. Must be able to pass a pre-employment (and biennially thereafter) physical and psychological exam per 10 Code of Federal Regulation part 1046. This position also requires applicants to be able to perform and pass the DOE and PNNL Protective Forces Training Program. Testing Designated Position This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
