Designer (4000)

Employer: Navarro Research and Engineering · Location: Idaho Falls, Idaho · Posting: NAV-70B02A3014 · Type: Full-Time

Duties

Navarro Research and Engineering is recruiting a Designer (4000). Candidate will work remotely, with the ability to come onsite as needed in Idaho Falls, ID. Navarro is an award-winning provider of turnkey solutions, delivering comprehensive nuclear, environmental and technical services to federal agencies, commercial enterprises and private clients across the United States. Our expertise supports organizations such as the Department of Energy, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Defense and NASA, while also extending to commercial industries and private sector partners facing complex engineering, technical and environmental challenges. Navarro specializes in nuclear operations, environmental remediation, D&D, waste management, advanced energy, facilities management, and technical and professional services. For more information, please visit Navarro-inc.com. Position Summary The Designer assesses engineering requirements and translates them into technical blueprints, drawings, layouts, and simulation models using CAD/CAM/CAE software. The position applies standard CAD/CAM/CAE techniques to digitize, edit, and revise engineering drawings of components, parts, and assemblies and customizes CAD/CAM/CAE software to model complex or unusual designs. The Designer will work remotely and must be able to report onsite as needed to the Materials and Fuels Complex at Idaho National Laboratory. MFC operates on a 4x10 schedule consisting of four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time. Responsibilities Develop and revise 2D drawings, 3D parametric models, assemblies, and associated documentation from approved engineering inputs. Create complete, unambiguous drawings that define geometry, interfaces, materials, finishes, processes, tolerances, inspection requirements, quantities, and assembly relationships needed for fabrication and installation. Select and apply functional datum reference frames, feature control frames, material condition modifiers, basic dimensions, and general tolerances in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2009. Evaluate tolerance accumulation and fit at part and assembly interfaces and identify conditions that could prevent fabrication, inspection, assembly, interchangeability, or intended operation. Apply sound parametric modeling practices, including stable design intent, fully constrained sketches, appropriate feature order, controlled references, reusable geometry, and clean assembly structure. Check drawings and models for fit, form, function, completeness, consistency, manufacturability, inspectability, and compliance with applicable drafting and engineering standards. Verify parts lists, item balloons, quantities, drawing references, zone locations, next-assembly information, notes, weld symbols, revision identifiers, and change markings across the complete drawing package. Maintain drawing, model, and reference-file integrity through established document control, revision control, configuration management, and records processes. Resolve technical comments from engineers, independent checkers, fabricators, inspectors, and formal document change reviews while preserving an auditable disposition of changes. Coordinate with engineers and other disciplines to clarify requirements, document assumptions, identify missing inputs, and recommend practical drawing or modeling solutions. Plan assigned work against negotiated priorities and dates, provide credible progress updates, and raise scope, resource, or schedule concerns before commitments are missed. Support backlog reduction with a constructive, service-oriented approach and mentor drafting personnel in modeling, detailing, checking, and GD&T application when requested. Perform other duties as assigned by the BEA Technical Point of Contact.

Qualifications

Minimum of three years of experience using PTC Creo software; Creo proficiency is required for immediate contribution. Overall specialization in precision mechanical design. Demonstrated ability to apply ASME Y14.5-2009 to real parts and assemblies, including datum systems, position, profile, orientation, runout, form controls, composite controls, projected tolerance zones, virtual condition, and bonus tolerance. Ability to explain why a GD&T scheme protects function and how the requirement can be manufactured and verified and to identify overconstrained, underdefined, conflicting, or noninspectable requirements. Advanced skill with PTC Creo and Windchill Data Management Software, or comparable parametric 3D CAD software and a data manager such as PDM or Vault, plus working knowledge of AutoCAD. Strong command of drawing layout, orthographic projection, section and detail views, dimensioning, tolerancing, weld symbols, parts lists, item ballooning, and revision practices. Ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, vendor data, design inputs, and redlines and convert them into controlled drawing content without changing engineering intent. Experience performing independent drawing checks and documenting clear, technically defensible comments. Working knowledge of materials, fabrication processes, machining, welding, inspection methods, assembly practices, and how these constraints affect drawing requirements. Ability to use logic and structured problem solving to compare alternatives, recognize risk, and resolve discrepancies across models, drawings, bills of material, and source documents. Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to ask focused questions, explain technical decisions, accept review feedback, and work effectively with personnel of varied experience levels. Preferred Qualifications Experience using Windchill or a comparable PDM or Vault data management system in a controlled engineering environment. Experience mentoring drafting personnel in parametric modeling, detailing, drawing checking, and GD&T application. Familiarity with fabrication, machining, welding, inspection, and assembly practices that affect drawing and model requirements. Education and Experience Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution and five years of relevant experience, or ten years of relevant experience without a degree. Work Location and Schedule: Location: Candidate will work remotely, with the ability to come onsite as needed. The primary onsite location is the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Schedule: MFC operates on a 4x10 schedule, consisting of four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday (approx. 7:00 AM–5:30 PM MST).
